pantone color report: spring 2017.

pantone spring 2017 color report // graphic by @luvfromafar

If you've been following {long distance loving} for any length of time, you will know I create a post every fall to illustrate Pantone's top ten hues for the next spring. With that in mind, it is only right that this is my post to say "hello, I'm going to try my best to blog again". So much has changed in my life in the last six months, but I'm determined to keep up my favorite little corner on the Internet. I may not be blogging every day, but I am certainly going to try my best to get all of the posts swirling around in my head out. I need some head space back! #mombrain

After looking through my previous illustrations from 2016, 2015, 2014, and 2013, I have to say that this year's report is rather vibrant. If I had to pick favorites, I would have to choose two of the three beautiful blues, Niagara and Lapis Blue. Don't hate me for being stuck in the blues: I promise my color choices don't reflect the sunny state of life in my world! It may not all be sunshine and rainbows, but I have never been as happy as I am today. I can't wait to give you more color (pardon the pun!) on life with two little ones. Lots more soon! xoxo {av}

Can you choose a favorite (or two!) from this year's Pantone Color Report?

Happy weekend! I know it has been a hot second since my last post, but I promise it is because I have a lot of great stuff coming your way very soon. I have also been giving myself the time I need to adjust to this whole working mom gig, without feeling like I always have a computer in front of me when {jv} is asleep. Thank you for bearing with me ;)

It has become a bit of a tradition for me to illustrate each spring's Pantone Color Report. I like to see how the colors all work together, as well as how they vary from year to year. (See for yourself -- here are the reports from the last three years: 2015, 2014, and 2013.) While Pantone hasn't released the color of the year yet (I'll update this post when they do), I don't see any runaway surprises like last year's Marsala. I think this year's top ten colors are a solid mix. Some years, the colors are all very muted or extremely bold. I actually like that there is a little of both for Spring 2016.

What are your favorites from the bunch?
I'm loving on the classic blue with a muted finish, Snorkel Blue, and the bright and bold red, Fiesta!
Lots more soon! xoxo {av}

pantone color report: spring 2015 // graphic by @luvfromafar

A few weeks ago, Pantone released their annual color report. This invaluable resource holds their annual predictions for the hottest colors in fashion for 2015. (You can download it here!) Compared to the last few reports, the hues of 2015 look to be a bit muted -- and I'm not complaining. I personally love that they included Classic Blue. You can call me boring, but it is one of my all-time favorites. It may be the impending holiday coziness, but Marsala is another hue which is catching my eye.

After the holidays are behind us, I plan to put my gift cards to good use with these 16 hues in mind. If you pin this graphic, you'll have an easy point of reference too ;) Do you agree with this subdued color palette? Which colors stand out to you this year? xoxo {av}

P.S. You can see my translation of the 2013 report here and the 2014 report here!

how to stay organized during your next move -- printable moving labels + excel worksheet included!

With our move sneaking up on us, I developed a little system to stay organized (and combat my pregnancy brain). When we moved last summer, I felt like boxes ended up in the wrong corners of our apartment and I was absolutely lost when it came time to unpack. Since we'll be moving from an apartment to a house this time around, we gain a bit more space to keep everything straight. I am trying to pack a few boxes a day in preparation because we don't know when baby {v} will decide to join us. As luck would have it, I will be full-term the week we expect to get possession of the house, so organization during our packing process is absolutely key.

The system I am implementing with this move is simple: I plan to place one of these labels on each box we pack and then add the information collected into one master Excel doc. (I also made this handy door sign to reduce confusion with our movers.) You can see what each of the elements of this system look like below!

how to stay organized during your next move -- printable moving labels + excel worksheet included!

Many of the boxes we've used over the years include a box which captures similar information, but it didn't always give the range of options necessary for our situation. I placed the "room" space at the top (since it is most pertinent to the movers -- or whomever you have carrying your boxes). Directly below it, I included an "instructions" space to capture whether anything was fragile or if the box was extremely heavy. The "contents" space is pretty self-explanatory, but this is essential for keeping your head on straight when you're trying to find an item in a pinch. The "box number" will ensure you have an easy way to identify a box. The packing information is useful if you're not the only one packing up!

A couple of notes: this 8.5" x 11" should be cut in half (down the center) for optimal use. Tape one half of the label to the top of the box and tape the other half to the side of the box. (This will allow you to see what is in the box from the top and side!) When printing the .PDF, I recommend choosing the "fit" to paper option -- if available. It will make the label as large as the margins of your printer allow.

I know this seems like a simple sheet, but it is an essential one. Whether you hire a moving company or promise your friends a pizza for their help, this door sign will help identify where to place the box they're carrying. This will reduce the number of times you get asked where any particular room is (and serves as your proxy if you have to make a lunch run or need more packing tape).

how to stay organized during your next move -- printable moving labels + excel worksheet included!

This Excel document will help you maintain your sanity in the best way possible. With everything in one place, you will not have to worry about the whereabouts of your favorite sweater or the next book in the series you're reading. I included a couple of example lines (which you can promptly delete) to serve as a guide behind my Type A madness. It may take a couple of minutes on the front end to enter the contents of the box into your spreadsheet, but it will pay dividends later. (There is even an app for Google Drive, if you wanted to add this information using your phone!)

Of course, no move is foolproof. My hope is that this system provides peace of mind as you prepare for your next move. If you're not moving any day soon, you can always pin this post for future reference when the time does come. Since I know my readers are full of fantastic ideas, please feel free to leave a comment below about your "best practices" for moving. Sharing is caring ;) xoxo {av}

dreaming away the cold.

In the winter, she curls up around a good book and dreams away the cold.

This has been one brutal winter. With spring finally making its long awaited return this week, I feel like I can finally breathe a huge sigh of relief. The temperatures may not be spring-like just yet, but I am holding onto hope that we aren't far from some warm sunshine. I spied this quote from Ben Aaronovitch and it described my feelings about this winter perfectly. I am officially dreaming away the cold.

After this endless winter, I'm calling March 20th is the start of a new "year". Who's with me? I may even make a few new resolutions, starting with putting my phone away after 9:30pm. What other "resolutions" would you like to start with this new season? xoxo {av}

P.S. Tackling our biggest project yet is taking the vast majority of my time and attention. If you hear from me less frequently in the coming weeks, please know I'm not far away...we just have a ton of decisions to make. I love my little space on the internet, but sometimes "real life" wins out. I promise to share updates on the house front when I have them. Thank you so much for your understanding {and moral support!}.

find happiness in the simplest of things.

find happiness in the simplest of things.

First things first, this isn't the post I sat down to write. I love editorial calendars, but this post evolved on its own. Follow me here: by the end of the week, I find many {seemingly} random photos on my phone because I'm a constant picture-taker. There are so many photos which I don't share on Instagram, mostly because I don't want to overwhelm your feed. I try to pick the best of the best to share with all of you, but it does mean my phone fills up with plenty of funny snaps.

I realized that many of those photos are little moments of happiness, which only mean something to me. Case in point: the photo featured above of the bookshelves in the entry of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum {touched up a bit with everyone's new favorite app, Waterlogue}. For me, this photo represents a perfect afternoon spent exploring a historic hideaway with my main squeeze {cv}. For everyone else, the photo looks like a random set of bookshelves.

In this internet-driven world, we're compelled to share everything.  Somewhere along the way, I made the choice to share the things I think others will like too {probably because it's called a "like"--go figure}. If I shared everything, you'd see just how normal my life really is. I just assume you'd rather not see my sweaty post-gym selfies or a bazillion snaps of my favorite kitties. I'm okay with that. I will treasure those random snaps from my typical Tuesdays for years to come. Who knows? Maybe they'll even become a future #tbt post.

In my pledge to you at the beginning of 2014, I promised you the best. The same applies to all elements of my "internet" life. I will continue to spare you my sweatiness, but I promise to share some of those hidden gems with you here on the blog. When you've long forgotten me ten years from now, I'll be grateful for those gems as I scroll through old posts. Maybe that is what blogging is all about...

How do you draw the line between the internet and "real" life--or do you? xoxo {av}

P.S. Does the idea behind Waterlogue remind anyone of those funny mall photobooths with the paint effects? I know I'm dating myself here.

pantone color report: spring 2014.

Pantone recently released their Fashion Color Report for Spring 2014. It is starting to feel like fall, but this in-depth report already has me dreaming of next spring. I had so much fun pulling together a visual for last year's report that I had to do it again! In my {humble} opinion, Spring 2014 is a bit richer than Spring 2013. I'm definitely not complaining about it. See for yourself!

Which is your favorite? If you're a color lover like me, it is next to impossible to pick just one.

A very happy Thursday! I'm excited to share a new summery iPhone background today :) When I spied this mint gimlet over on The Life Styled, summer felt just a bit closer. The fresh limes and gorgeous striped tablecloth stir up summer memories.

you've got my only heart.

Happy Tuesday! When this little ditty popped up on Pandora yesterday, I decided it was time to devote another post to John Mayer. I've tried to tone down my love of Katy Perry's other half here for one simple reason: if you knew how deep my love was, you might be a wee bit alarmed. Thankfully, {cv} understands my affection. Though these are my favorite lyrics, Only Heart is on the same album--and takes me back to my first year of college with one strum of his guitar.
I don't know about you, but lyrics have a way of implanting themselves in my heart. Two years after I first heard this song, I found the guy who would get my only heart. For some reason, this song always gave me the hope I would find "my person" one day. I realize just how cheesy that sounds, but I don't care--it's true. For those of you who have found that person, you understand what I mean. If you haven't found them just yet, be patient. The waiting game isn't fun, but I promise it's worth it. Leave it to John Mayer to remind me how far I've come in ten years...

Thank you for letting me geek out on John Mayer today ;) Have a great day, friends! xoxo {av}

P.S. A very happy birthday to my dear friend, {as}! Thank you for being one of my biggest fans and best friends! I can't wait to celebrate with you!

don't you worry child.

Last week, one of my dearest friends lost her beautiful, kind, loving and devoted mother.
Today, I am in Indiana celebrating her life. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

After hearing the Swedish House Mafia hit for months, one line in particular stood out to me last week. I'm sure they didn't plan for their song, Don't You Worry Child, to inspire a blog post, but it did. The line above struck a chord with me. Loss reminds us how important it is to cherish each day we have on earth--because we never know what day will be our last.

I'll be back to regular programming on Thursday. Keep the infinite wisdom of Swedish House Mafia
front of mind today {and every day}. Heaven absolutely has a plan for each of us. xoxo {av}

a is for.

I don't know about you, but this weekend passed in the blink of an eye! Friday night, I spent the evening at the first birthday bash for the PVD Lady Project--a group I just joined here in Providence. As a transplant in the Ocean State, I am counting my blessings I discovered such an A+ group of women in a place so far from home.

On Saturday, I decided to hop in the car and make a last-minute trip down to NYC. Maybe it was because {cv} was working or because I was sad I wasn't out in California celebrating my dad, but whatever it was, I made my first drive down to the Big Apple. For a girl who grew up driving around cornfields and dodging cows in the road, I was pretty proud of myself for managing the streets of New York. I had a wonderful night in on Saturday with two of my best friends and a few of their co-workers, complete with homemade molten lava cakes. {I promise a recipe soon!}

Brunch is one of my favorite meals, so when Sunday morning rolled around, we decided to go to Buvette--a wonderful little French place the three of us had been for dinner in November 2011. I indulged in a little croque monsieur to fuel up for my drive back to Rhode Island. Before heading north, I grabbed a hot chocolate with my favorite fellow Georgetown blogger. After navigating the city this time, I know I can make many more trips down in the future ;)

Sunday night, I came home to my favorite Indian food on the table--just in time to watch the Academy Awards. {cv} knows how much I love the red carpet, so he was prepared! My favorites {though it was hard to choose!} were Jessica Chastain, Naomi Watts, and Jennifer Lawrence. {jl} gets major props from me for recovering so well from her fall up the stairs!

Though Mondays may not be my favorite, memories of a great weekend will make today just
a little easier. Having a fun Boston Bloggers event on tap tonight doesn't hurt either ;)
What moments from your weekend deserve an A?! xoxo {av}

i have ideas.

During the blizzard earlier this month, {cv} and I finally finished the last season of West Wing. Though I wasn't eager to say goodbye to the characters, I was eager to tackle a few other series we've been putting on the back burner--most notably, Mad Men. I don't know about you, but working through a series from the beginning makes it feel less like TV and more like a movie. I'm down with that...

I may not love the philandering men, but I do love the classic fashion. Seeing behind the scenes in the ad world also make this graphic design nerd very happy. We're only halfway through the first season and I'm totally intrigued. I am also very glad clip-on earrings aren't the style these days. My ears would hate me!

We were late to the game with Downton Abbey, but we are right on track these days. {I am heartbroken after seeing the end of this season...don't even get me started.} After we work through
Mad Men, we're open for ideas--as long as the shows don't involve vampires or blood.
What TV series are in your "life" queue?  xoxo {av}

lucky.

Back in November, I preemptively shared a holiday iPhone background. It was a little early, but this time around, I don't think I'm overshooting. With Valentine's Day behind us, a springy iPhone wallpaper is in order. It may be my ever-present desire for warmer weather, but whatever it is, a dose of green won't hurt anyone. Here's a "lucky" iPhone background which is perfect for the lead-up to March 17th...

Not sure how to install it? Here's the skinny...

You can strategically place your apps so that the lucky clover shows in the right hand corner. Tricky, right? If you use the background, tag it on twitter or instagram with the #ahappyiphone hashtag! xoxo {av}

eyes on the prize.

Whenever I find myself a bit overwhelmed, I often tell myself to keep my eyes on the prize.
When that happens on a Tuesday morning, it is clear a crazy week is on tap...

When I get overwhelmed, I count my blessings for the things which keep me busy. Whether it is my job, this blog, or all the things I voluntarily put on my plate, I have the health and the will power to tackle my to-do list. Last month, I realized something very important: my "prize" is the happy life I'm building with {cv}--and beyond. The reality is that my eyes are always on the prize. I will joyfully wade through these nutty weeks so I can contribute to our long-term vision.

As the calendar turned to 2013, I resolved to get real. I'm sticking with it. I cannot thank you enough for allowing me to step back to 4 posts a week--without leaving me in the dust. With one month into 2013, more balance is definitely in sight. If you're a blogger, I hope you will give yourself the same luxury this year. How are you continuing to get real in 2013? Keep your eyes on your prize! xoxo {av}

every new beginning.

I'm sure the second you see the quote below you'll sing the song. This weekend, the song Closing Time came to mind as I put more thought into my hopes for 2013. I may seem counterintuitive that a seemingly depressing song is what popped in my head for the start of a new year, but hear me out...

The reality is that much of what I am working on this year revolves around changing old habits. In my blog life, it started with my #getreal2013 post last Thursday. In my "physical" life, it started with a re-dedication to gym time and a commitment to really trying to step outside of my food comfort zone. In my "intellectual" life, it started with the decision to really read more. In my personal life, it started with an honest investment in my friends and family--and the choice to show how much I care.

These may all seem simple, but I'll make the clichĂ© statement about it being easier said than done. The truth is that I'm an OCD blogger, a tremendously picky eater, a "I have too much else to do than read"-er, and a continual over-committer. This year, I'll make the step toward new beginnings and watch those old "beginnings" fade away. I'm praying {cv}, along with my friends, family, and all of you, notice these happy changes :) What new beginning are you seriously committing to in 2013? xoxo {av}

deck the halls.

Happy December! Can you believe it's here?! I know I can't! {cv} and I had an action-packed weekend in New England, which included great friends, pretty snow, tree trimming, and a surprise 80th birthday party with {cv}'s family. All in all, it was a success! We've made a big effort this year to not be scheduled every minute of the holiday season...and we are on our way. Find some more holiday goodness from our weekend below!

  • I pinned some seriously yummy recipes for the holiday season. I clearly have a thing for peppermint...and chocolate. I know I'm not alone ;)
  • We put up our tiny artificial tree on Sunday night. It has survived six seasons and will be retired once we get in our house next year. {I can't wait to have a real tree--at long last!} The whole thing was strangely bittersweet...
  • After our annual white light vs. color light debate, we again settled on these white + red + green pearl lights from Target. They feel perfectly vintage-y, as this instagram affirms!
  • {cv} and I watched my all-time favorite Christmas movie, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, while trimming the tree. {"Why is the carpet all wet, Todd?" "I don't know, Margot!"}
  • I made an Amazon Wish List to help supplement the other one I have year-round. {cv} and I had a lightbulb moment when we visited friends this weekend who reminded us the first year of home ownership is also a crazy year of spending. I'm hoping we can front-run it by asking for coffee table books and other little goodies for our house...even if those prezzies will go into storage for now.
  • We poured over all our photos from this year and finally settled on a few from our European adventure for our annual Christmas card. Paired with some shimmery envelopes from Paper Source, I'm already itching to address them.
As I try to keep my head on straight this December, I am doing my best to plan ahead and not over-schedule us in the coming days. What other tips do you have for keeping the joy of the season alive--without getting bogged down in the details?!

holiday iphone backgrounds.

Ok, ok--it may be a little early, but I couldn't help myself. If there is one place I might be able to sneak in some holiday cheer before socially acceptable, it's on my iPhone. Though I haven't perfected this background art just yet, I wanted to give you a peek at my first prototypes :) Since I'm an equal opportunity iPhone lover, you can find holiday backgrounds for both the 4 and the 5...

Thanks for letting me try something new today...I just hope you like it!

a new toy.

Though I'm happy the first snow didn't happen in October this year, I have to admit that I wasn't exactly prepared for it yesterday. I was in shorts two weeks ago for goodness sake! However, I will thank the snow for inspiring today's post ;) After my marathon, I decided to treat myself to a little something in the form of a Wacom Bamboo Splash tablet. It finally came yesterday and I was so excited to give it a try. Though this graphic is rather simple, it was my first attempt with what I'm sure will become one of my favorite gadgets...

Since you're reading a blog, I'm going to bet you have a few favorite gadgets, programs, or apps. I love my MacBook, but I rarely use {cv}'s iPad. Call me boring, but I find myself using my iPhone mostly for the basic phone functions, Instagram, and Nike+. My readers are some of the most resourceful {and tuned-in} people I know, so I can't wait to hear what techie goodness you have up your sleeves!

I'll see you for a bonfire-inspired Friday's Fancies tomorrow! As always, any and all fashion posts are welcome! Thank you for putting up with my rudimentary first try on my little tablet--I just had to record it for posterity's sake ;) Have a great Thursday!

focus.

Happy Monday! After closing on our land last Friday and making an all-too-quick jaunt to North Carolina over the weekend, I am officially back to reality. With my marathon only six days away, my excitement is growing--and so are my nerves! I have a crazy week of work {including a three-day meeting in Porstmouth, New Hampshire} standing between me and the plane ride to DC on Friday night.

In order to help me keep my focus, I have three very special visitors on the blog this week...

Many thanks again to Melissa, Caitlin, and Kelley for making my life infinitely easier this week :)
Trust me: you won't want to miss their beyond gorgeous guest posts. We're talking serious eye candy!

I'll be back on Friday with the 100th edition of Friday's Fancies! SO EXCITED!
Thank you for being such a loyal and loving crew! #countingmyblessingsthisweek

P.S. If you need anything at all this week, please email me--it's the best way to catch me :)

the report.

With the release of Pantone's newest color report, there is sure to be a full-blown color explosion in the blogosphere this week. The Pantone Fashion Color Report for Spring 2013 is an absolute must-read. I loved seeing how fashion's biggest stars channeled these hues in their designs.

I always love seeing the names they attribute to these Pantone shades. African Violet? Tender Shoots? They're spot-on, if you ask me. My favorites are Poppy Red and Linen--with Emerald and Lemon Zest coming in close behind.

Is it bad that all of the fabulous fashion coming out of NYC and this color report already have me dreaming of spring? I know, I know. I'll stop wishing time away ;)

P.S. I {sadly} don't work for Pantone. I am simply using the color names + numbers in this post and cannot claim to have crafted them on my own ;)
