a little twinkle.

Driving home last night, I spotted a few fireflies--a sight I'm not used to seeing in the city. I got nostalgic for the days I would catch them in my backyard in Indiana, entranced by how those little bugs provided so much glow {and made my hands smell totally weird--remember that!?}. I hated when the weather turned colder because I knew I'd have to wait until the next summer for the fireflies to return...

I connected the dots last night--and realized one of the reasons I have always been obsessed with twinkle lights my whole life. They remind me of the fields of fireflies at home in Indiana. Not only do they provide an extra dose of sparkle, but they also bring so much joy! It is amazing how one simple strand of lights can transform a whole scene, don't you think?

Somehow, I think twinkle lights will always bring me back to those summer nights
spent chasing fireflies...

Is there anything that makes you nostalgic for summer?

I hope your Wednesday has a little extra twinkle today :) More tomorrow! xoxo {av}

  2. Twinkling lights are my favorite, and especially year round. I get nostalgic for mornings on my screen in porch, when it is semi cool and the grassy smells fill the air. A refreshing start to the day with a big cup of coffee and my mom!

  3. How pretty! I remember trying to catch them in my cousin's backyard. Oh, to be little and running around barefoot chasing fireflies in the summer!

  4. I do adore fireflies. They seem to just whisper of whimsy and magic. Haha. And a God who loves creating strangely beautiful things.

I love little lights as well. I was drawn like a bug to a light to this post. ;)

  5. So fun! Fireflies are the BEST! I used to catch them at my cottage. For me, raspberries are my summer reminder. I used to pick them on the side of the road up by my cottage, the ones in the store don't taste anywhere near as delicious as a fresh berry straight from the bush. I wonder if that has anything to do with my love of deep pink...hmmm haha

  6. Oh I love your collage! I never thought of it that way but you are so right! Wow that makes me miss my home in Ohio, sitting on the deck until super late, grilling, dancing to Oldies with my dad, and watching the fireflies and stars at night. Thank you for the memory! I want to take a trip home, now! :)

  13. I love twinkle lights, too, especially at weddings. And I'm Jewish, so I've never been able to decorate for Christmas - AND I WANT TO! That might add to my love. :)

  17. it is sad. even though i am technically "in the country" i have only seen one firefly this summer. where have they all gone?? i used to love catching them in the summer . . . and then letting them go. i would cry if kids would kill them, or pull their lights out, or put them in a jar without holes.

  18. Ahhh love your blog! I'm in a long distance relationship and have been for a couple of years. We definitely make it work but I can't wait to live with him or at least the same city as him!!

Someone asked me about my "potential" wedding and what I dream it will be like and all I know is that I'll have tons of little lights everywhere :)

    Check out my blog!

  19. Twinkle lights are gorgeous but they, unfortunately, don't remind me of any fireflies. Sigh, the hardships of growing up in the city. Haha.

Who knows, maybe one day I'll move out of the city and then find things in the country that make me nostalgic of buses and the MBTA... but I doubt it :-p

  24. Ahh I love fireflies....Funny story. I spent my summer in the Bahamas where fireflies just don't exist. I saw my first firefly (in a year) last Friday night. I was babysitting and we decided it would be a good idea to go out and catch some (just like when I was a kid). The bad news is we got locked out of the house and realized it and began freaking before we got the chance to catch a firefly. Sad day, but there are still some summer nights left so I am due for some fireflies.

I agree about the strand of lights completely transform the scene...beautiful.

  25. What a magical post! I've been missing fireflies and lilacs so much lately-summer gems that never seem to make an appearance in Northern California!

  26. Love love love! I actually had Christmas tree lights up in my room year-round in middle school and high school. I'd plug them in, turn off the other lights and lay on my bed listening to Sarah Maclaughlin and read. True bliss. ;)

  27. I love this post! Twinkling lights always kinda get my heart racing - it makes life seem so much more magical. I was introduced to fireflies for the first time this summer (I grew up on the west coast, but now live on the east coast) and am in complete awe of them.

  33. Nothing makes me more happy then these beautiful lights. Where I'm from we never have fireflies so it reminds me of summers in North Carolina when I would finally get to see them! Sooo beautiful <3
