recent wardrobe + beauty finds: spring 2016.

I'm baaaaaack! After a crazy few weeks (see Instagram evidence here), I can admit that real life took precedence to sharing trivial things like what goodies have been in my shopping cart -- though sometimes, it is a welcome distraction. From clothes (both regular and maternity friendly) to beauty products, you're about to get an eyeful. My novel awaits you...

STYLE: Dressing the basketball I smuggle under my shirt daily is no easy task. As this pregnancy winds down, I find myself hesitating to buy too many more maternity pieces. When I was pregnant the last go around (late March to early December), I purchased more in the way of summer wear -- though my "big" days of pregnancy weren't until the colder months. This pregnancy (late September to early June), I had to buy a few more winter weather appropriate pieces to help me get through the colder months. You'll find some non-maternity and maternity purchases I've made in recent months in the paragraphs below. My aim has been to find pieces which will be comfortable now and later, so I think the comfy factor works for everyone. (If you want some more specific ideas on how to build a maternity wardrobe you'll love, this post is for you!)
  • While J.Crew is rather disappointing for maternity wear, I have found a number of pieces at Madewell over the course of this pregnancy (and last pregnancy) that have worked surprisingly well. This dress (in my favorite cobalt blue!) worked well for me until roughly 31 weeks, when the only issue became the length. I'm looking forward to wearing it this summer after baby arrives when I want something loose and airy. This top has been perfect for work -- and for the rare date night -- as it is rather flowy and does have buttons up the back, which could give extra room if needed. Last but not least, I lived in pull-on shorts during my last pregnancy, so I was thrilled to discover they had a few pairs. I grabbed a pair of these basic shorts, but they also have a myriad of other solids and prints that are calling my name.
  • I discovered a few nursing-friendly dresses from ASOS which will be ideal for the summer after the baby arrives -- and still give me ample bump space for the remainder of this pregnancy. This scalloped dress (available with short sleeves or long sleeves) is pretty perfect, though it doesn't have the airy cotton feel that this maxi dress does. I wasn't a big ASOS Maternity gal last time around, but I definitely think their selection and their price points are tough to beat.
  • It's hard to quit lululemon while I'm pregnant, so I have just been a bit more creative in my purchases. I cannot speak more highly of the Align Pants. They have a slightly higher rise and literally feel like you're wearing nothing at all, which they call the "naked sensation". I know these will also be clutch in those early days post baby when I want to 'contain' myself a bit. I'm also a new fan of the super soft Pima cotton Trapeze Long Sleeve, which is comfortably harnessing my (almost) 33 week bump, without being skin tight. I may have mentioned them before, but I adore the Tracker Shorts whether I'm pregnant or not. They're the perfect length and are not constricting / muffin top-inducing. To combat a little chafing from time to time, I bought one pair of Speed Track Shorts, which do the trick. I purchased all of these one size larger than my "normal" size and haven't had any issues with accommodating my bump. If you want more fit pregnancy gear advice, take a peek at this extensive post from my last pregnancy!)
  • While I love Rent The Runway, it isn't necessarily the most feasible option when you're 33 weeks pregnant. It worked much better in the earlier weeks of pregnancy (up until maybe 26 weeks?) because my bump and "girls" are so unpredictable after that mark. Their bump-friendly section is helpful, but I would caution to really read the reviews to see about fit. While my final dress selection will be a game-time call, I did find a few fun accessories to help make me feel a little less "house-like" in these final weeks. I'm not a big pink fan (sorry, folks), but these fuchsia heels were too good to pass up. A fun pop of color can make anyone (pregnant or not) feel more confident. As far as jewelry goes, I had been on the hunt for a few special pieces outside of the J.Crew or Nordstrom jewelry section. After lusting on them for far too long, I gave myself these earrings and this bracelet at Christmastime -- and I'm so glad I did. They make a big statement and I know I'll wear both pieces for years to come.
  • This is totally minor, but I wear a Fitbit Charge HR and have always wanted to jazz it up a little bit. Cue this pretty (and not too committal) addition to my wrist. Now, I can try to be fit and fashionable at the same time ;)

BEAUTY: A few months back, I shared a look at my quick beauty routine, which has included a few improvements in recent months. I'm not a product junkie by any means, so when I find something I like, I generally stick to it. (This would probably explain why my curly hair routine hasn't changed in... 15 years.)
  • Six weeks ago, I upgraded to this undereye balm from Clarins. I loved this gel for years when I needed a quick and refreshing jolt after a long night, but I need a bit more help in the fine line department. They cost the same, but I feel the fine line coverage with the balm in a way I didn't with the balm. Word for the wise: don't be shy to ask for help at your Clarins counter (or any counter for that matter). I was in a hurry one day and took home this more advanced serum, thinking a bit more help couldn't hurt -- and ended up with a strong reaction because it was doing too much for that eye area. When I went to return it, they told me they typically recommend it for people over the age of 50. Oops...?
  • While we're on the topic of the undereye area (a lifelong battle in my corner of the world), I decided to make a few changes in the hopes I can make myself look a bit more awake. I always finish with this camouflage concealer, but I added this primer to help my cause. It doesn't crease and serves as a good base for my concealer. When I really need a pick-me-up, I also add this correcting fluid (in peach) to the mix. It helps even out my coloring and does a solid job of hiding those extra tired eyes.
  • I am desperately trying to get better about my nighttime beauty routine, so I'm taking small steps (like adding in a nighttime moisturizer) for a bit of restoration during my sleeping hours. Interesting fact: I used this years ago and stopped, mostly because I got lazy, but they've revamped it a bit in that time -- and I like this formula so much better.
  • This facial oil (found at Follain) is also a new and cost-friendly favorite. I will force myself to look past the price tag to buy this serum one day soon because I've heard such good things. Note: I don't use the moisturizer and the oil together. Some nights, the moisturizer has too strong of a scent and I prefer the oil -- it's all in how I'm feeling. Trust me: I know I need to work on this routine, but right now, I'm doing the best I can ;)
  • If you want to give some life to those cheeks of yours, this illuminator may be just what you need. Though the name is a little scandalous (cough Orgasm cough), I have long been a fan of the blush and the blush stick. This 'pretty potion', as I like to call it, in the same shade is quickly becoming my go-to for a little extra glow.
Since this post is already a novel, I'll save the new products that I've been loving for our little man for another post. I also owe you a few posts on our experience with daycare... I haven't forgotten! More importantly, I have another getaway post to share after an incredible weekend in Vermont; if you have a case of wanderlust like I do, you won't want to miss it. If there are any other topics you want me to explore, shoot me an email or leave a comment below :) Last but certainly not least, if you're still reading to here, THANK YOU. I know it was a doozy. Enjoy the rest of your week! xoxo {av}

two quick beauty routines for new moms (or for anyone).

two quick beauty routines for new moms (or for anyone!)

Since {jv} came on the scene, time is in even shorter supply than I expected. I knew my routines would have to change, but I now have two paths to take when I put my face on in the mornings. I have a "bare minimum" routine, which can be enhanced with the "four-minute pick-me-up". {jv} watches my every move when I get ready in the mornings for work, so I have to keep it quick. If you're a fan of efficient makeup routines (whether you're a mom or not!), these are for you!

When it comes to makeup, my priorities are the length of wear and ease of use. Some of these products require a bit of an investment, but for me, it is an investment in myself (for once these days). If something can make me feel even the slightest bit more like a human, I jump at it ;) These routines may work for me, but I would love to hear what works for you too. Leave your favorite in the comments below -- even as a creature of habit, I'm all ears to what works for you. Enjoy your weekend!  xoxo {av}

P.S. I don't know about you, but when Sephora offers a sale, I act on it. As a creature of habit with my makeup and hair routine, I know what products I need at any given time. As long as you're a Sephora VIB, you'll get 15% off your order through April 21st using the code VIBLOVE. Don't say I didn't warm you ;)

THE BARE MINIMUM: Though it looks way more complicated than it actually is, my bare minimum routine just gets me to a solid starting point -- and gives me enough confidence to face the world, even if I don't have the time I'd like to get ready.

-Clarins Multi-Active Day Early Wrinkle Correcting Lotion: It's a fact that makeup goes on much better when your skin is hydrated. I had to do some research to find a lotion compatible with my sensitive skin. With an SPF included, this lotion from Clarins is lightweight and easy to apply. It has a soft and pleasant scent, which didn't offend my sensitive nose while pregnant. I have this lotion on every day of the year.
-Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer: My bff introduced me to this concealer the year we graduated from college -- and it's been my go-to ever since. It doesn't require a special brush for application and it packs a serious punch for dark circles.
-Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder + Bronzer Brush: I was leery about bronzer until a few years ago, when the winter pastiness really got the best of me. Since I do my best to stay out of the sun, I need a little color in some shape or fashion. This powder + brush combo is the best I've found; the color lasts for hours and doesn't look cakey.
-Dior Diorshow Waterproof Mascara: This mascara has been a favorite since college. The waterproof mascara requires a bit more in the way of makeup removal at the end of the night, but it helps with the new mom hormones (aka spontaneous tears).
-Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow: When time is of the essence, a couple of quick swipes of a light shade + a dark shade of this long-wear shadow will do the trick.
-Aquaphor Healing Ointment: We have tubs of Aquaphor in nearly every room of our home. It works wonders on a number of baby ailments, but it also works as an incredible basic lip balm.

THE FOUR-MINUTE PICK-ME-UP: This routine includes the extra steps I add on days when {jv} may have fallen asleep after his morning feed while I'm getting ready for work  -- or is just being kind enough to let me have a few extra minutes ;)

-Benefit Cosmetics Erase Paste: If I need a little extra coverage after a long night, adding this concealer below my Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer makes a big difference. (Be sure to watch Sephora's video on application to prevent excess application.)
-Dior Rosy Glow Healthy Glow Awakening Blush: Another bff shared this with me during a recent visit to Rhode Island. It is the newest piece of any of my makeup routines -- and I absolutely LOVE it. It is seriously a magic blush which creates the perfect amount of color for your cheeks.
-Bobbi Brown Bobbi's Browns Eye Palette: I created my own palette of Bobbi Brown hues, but this set contains similar tones to the ones I use on an every day basis.
-Dior Diorshow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum: This plumping serum works as a fantastic primer for my waterproof mascara. I use it to help keep my eyelashes from getting too brittle, which is a phenomenon I discovered in my late twenties.
-Nars Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner: When I have an extra minute to get ready, I love adding some eyeliner to help make my eyes pop. This eyeliner doesn't require a pencil sharpener, only a twist of the pen.

BONUS STEPS:
-Clarins Eye Contour Gel: I've professed my love of this eye gel before, but I can share it again, can't I? It definitely softens dark circles and cools down your eyes before a long day begins.
-Neutrogena Make-up Remover Cleansing Towelettes: Actresses tout these wipes on TV, but I just wish they hired people who use these wipes day in and day out (like me!). I can't start or end my day without them.
-Dior Crème de Rose Smoothing Plumping Lip Balm: I mostly love this lip balm for its scent; the plumping feature is just a bonus.

fast + easy pregnancy skincare routine.

fast + easy pregnancy skincare routine.
(this post is not sponsored by Mama Mio--I just love their products that much.)

Disclaimer: A few of you have inquired about how my skincare routine has changed in pregnancy. This post is for you! I am not a medical professional, so don't take my words as gospel. If you are pregnant {or ever have been pregnant}, I would love to hear about your favorite pregnancy skincare tips. If you're not pregnant {but would like to be one day}, you might want to pin this for future reference. If you're not pregnant {and don't see that in your future}, I promise non-pregnancy posts in the coming days ;)

Before bedtime:
-I cleanse my face using my Clarisonic Mia and my favorite Clarins Gentle Foaming Cleanser. {This was a part of my pre-pregnancy routine as well.} I find that my skin is much drier and more prone to breakouts in pregnancy, so I like to use my Mia often to try and ward off blemishes. The Clarins cleanser has a soft and pleasant smell, which has never caused me any nausea in pregnancy.
-After sporting some pretty pimples for a few weeks, I was happy to discover the Belli Acne Control Spot Treatment. It doesn't contain salicylic acid {one of the ingredients I have chosen to avoid in pregnancy} and smells a bit like the organic skincare aisle at Whole Foods. In other words, it is unoffensive and very natural.
-As most pregnant women do, I extensively researched stretch mark creams. Most of my research pointed toward genetics--not stretch mark cream--as the predictor for whether you'd earn your pregnancy "stripes". My mother did not have any stretch marks after I was born, so I'm hoping I end up with the same fate. Even still, I wanted to stay moisturized because of the itchiness and discomfort which comes with the stretching skin of pregnancy. My research {and sensitive sniffer} all pointed to Mama Mio. At night, I use a few pumps of the Mama Mio The Tummy Rub Oil on my belly and rear. After oiling up, I use one {or sometimes two} pumps of the Mama Mio Pregnancy Boob Tube on my "ladies" all the way up to my neck. I can't get enough of the light lemon smell--and {cv} doesn't complain either.
-Word to the wise: bring your pajamas into the bathroom with you as you slather on this Mama Mio goodness. Bringing the lemony smell to the bedroom isn't a terrible thing, but I personally want to avoid getting oil all over our sheets. If you sleep in your birthday suit, you can make your own call here ;)

After a shower (or in the morning):
-Mama Mio recommends two treatments daily, but I tend to reach for a different product in the mornings than I do at night. Before I pop on my outfit for the day, I take a fair amount of Mama Mio The Tummy Rub Butter and go to town from my neck to my bum. This stuff doesn't mess around--it truly lasts all day. I kid you not: when I change into my workout clothes after a crazy day at work, I can still feel the moisture from my Mama Mio Butter. I'm also thrilled it has helped me avoid excess itchiness and discomfort. As weird as it sounds, I will be the first to admit that I actually enjoy the time I spend rubbing on my belly. {I feel like I'm bonding!}
-Worth mentioning {but not spending more time reviewing here}: I have been even more diligent about my sunscreen use during pregnancy. As if my previous melanoma didn't kick me into sunscreen mode, the fear of melanoma did. Whether you're pregnant or not, it is vitally important to stay on top of your SPF. Click here for an extensive guide to my favorite sunscreens.
-As an aside, I take my showers in the morning--thanks to my crazy curly hair. I always run the Clarisonic + Clarins play in the shower, so I'm often cleansing my face twice a day. If you're more of a night shower lady, I would still subscribe to the "before bedtime" routine and use this morning routine before you get dressed.

The long descriptions may have you scared, but I promise you that my pregnancy skincare routine is fast and easy. It may not be the cheapest routine in the world, but for me, it is worth it. I am a low-maintenance beauty girl, so I don't mess around with lots of different products. I find what I like and stick to it. My pre-bedtime routine takes less than five minutes; my morning routine barely takes two. I'll take that!

If you're pregnant now or ever have been, I would love to hear about your own pregnancy skincare routine. I know plenty of other options exist, so I am always eager to hear what worked for others. If I've learned one thing in pregnancy, it is that I'm not the first person to be pregnant--nor will I be the last. Sharing information is the best method for maintaining my expectant mother sanity! Can't wait to hear your two cents... xoxo {av}

Full Body Coverage Lotion: Clarins Sun Care Milk Lotion Spray with SPF 50+
I normally hate spray lotions, but this lotion makes solo application nearly foolproof. It sprays out as a lotion, not an oil, so there isn't any weird mess. It won't blow away in the wind and it smells fantastic.

Summer Daily Moisturizer: Clarins UV Plus HP Multi-Protection Day Screen with SPF 40 (tinted version here!)
The summer sun demands a higher SPF for daily use and this moisturizer did the trick for me. Not only is it super light, it didn't cause me breakouts like some facial moisturizers with SPF do.

Winter Daily Moisturizer: Clarins Multi-Active Early Wrinkle Correcting Lotion with SPF 15
I discovered the multi-active lotion {without SPF 15} in 2010 and fell in love. The incredible smell accompanies this impressive moisturizer, so it was a no-brainer to make the move to the SPF version when it was released.

Lip Protection: Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment with SPF 15 (eight other colors also available!)
Prevent the lobster lips with this easy, smooth lip treatment from Fresh. It is lightweight but provides fabulous coverage, which lasted much longer than other SPF lip protection I've tried.

Six years ago this month, I picked up the magazine which would forever change my relationship with the sun. With the help of Glamour, I spotted what a dermatologist would later confirm was a melanoma. {Read the full backstory here.} Since May is Skin Cancer Awareness month, I figured there was no time like the present to share a few of my favorite sunscreens.

Before I found my melanoma, I was an avid sun worshipper. I never burned. I wore SPF 4 {at max} when I was out in the sun. I went to the tanning bed regularly. I thought my olive skin was immune to skin cancer. After my diagnosis, I was shocked and scared about my future. I had to redefine my perception of beauty. Above all, I realize I was dead wrong about the sun in my teens and early twenties.

My diagnosis meant I had to take a hard look at my sun care choices. It took some time to find products which made me feel safe and confident in the sun. I'm here today to share my field test. Though this post may look like it is sponsored by Clarins, I can assure you it is not. I simply think their products are worth the investment. I discovered the Clarins sun care line in 2012 and have been a loyal user for the last two years. I don't see that changing any day soon. Not only do I have sensitive skin, I have a sensitive sniffer--and Clarins passes both my tests. With their coverage and consistency, I'm easily Clarins number one fan.

If you're looking for something a bit more cost-friendly, the Neutrogena line is a trusty old favorite. My dermatologist carries samples of their products in her office, so it is nice to know proper sun care doesn't have to be expensive. If you're looking for ways to get the sun-kissed glow without the harmful rays, these self-tanners are just the ticket.

As a disclaimer, I am NOT a doctor or dermatologist. These sunscreens are simply my personal favorites. The one thing I can say with confidence is this: do not consider yourself immune to the dangers of the sun. If you haven't had a skin check recently {or ever}, do yourself a favor and book one before the summer sun really hits.

Do you have any favorite sunscreens? Share what you love--and why you love it. I'm all ears! xoxo {av}
P.S. Don't forget about the sun savvy pledge Danielle and I created three years ago. You can decide today to change your habits!

10 no-brush blushes.

10 no-brush + no-fuss blush options!

If I could describe my make-up routine in one word, it would be simple. I wear make-up on an almost daily basis, but I like to keep my application to under three minutes. {I value my beauty sleep!} It may sound crazy, but I have it down to a bit of science. When I found blush sticks, I discovered a "grown-up" version of the gel blush from Bonne Bell that I used to wear in 1999. While I do use a brush for my bronzer, I don't want to tote around a separate one for my blush. I love the fact I can concentrate my blush in one particular area with a blush stick.

I have both the NARS and Tarte sticks, which are easy to pack for work trips, vacations, and spontaneous weekends away. I like the NARS stick for everyday use. The Tarte stain is often my date night and special occasion pick for its bold color.  I love the dewy look that both give, but most of all, I love their simplicity. Do you use a blush stick or are you a fan of more "traditional" blush? xoxo {av}

updo uproar.

This weekend, I'm honored to be standing beside one of my beautiful cousins as she says "I do." Whenever I'm asked to be a bridesmaid, I always get a bit nervous--because of my hair. Do a quick Google search of "curly bridesmaid updos" and you'll be seriously frightened. It's where the butterfly clips and jewels of the early 2000s went to die. There are a few celebrities in the mix, but walking the red carpet is very different than walking down the aisle.

Growing up, no one at the hair salon knew how to tame my hair. I ended up with cornrows and a puffball of curls for my junior and senior proms. {I wish I was kidding.} In a few recent weddings, my hair has been so cemented to my head that I get a three-day headache. The only day I've ever really loved my curly updo was my wedding day. The difference there? It was my wedding day and he spent two hours constructing that perfect pile of curls.

As a bridesmaid, you're simply an auxiliary part of the day. While important, guests are really only focused on one thing: the bride. I'm really ok with that. {I've had my day in the sun!} My argument with curly updos is simply that I don't want to look embarrassing in photos. I don't wear my hair down because it inevitably would find its way up. I don't have those curls hanging in front of your eyes because I have weird flashbacks to eighth grade dances and butterfly clips. I simply want some loose curls which look elegant and not frizzy. Is that so much to ask?

For the wedding this weekend, I've decided they should simply blow out my hair and add some curls into the mix. Thankfully, my hair would happily hold whatever shape someone puts into it. I'm just going to pray for no rain {or snow!}. If you're a fellow curly girl, what directions do you give your stylist when you ask for an updo? Cross your fingers for no cornrows this weekend ;) xoxo {av}

new year, new you.

While in London, I picked up a new fragrance for 2014: Jo Malone Vanilla & Anise. I am picky when it comes to scents. Anything too floral or heavy gives me a headache. I tend to spray myself with my favorite, then leave the store (much to the salesperson's chagrin). If I can make it for a few hours without picking up a nasty headache, I find my way back to the store (much to the saleperson's surprise) and buy the scent.

As we walked away from the store, beautiful bag in hand, I realized it isn't just the scent which makes my perfume purchases so time-consuming. It is the fact I attach memories to whatever scent I buy. The Jo Malone pick from London will always remind me of our European escape. For me, the perfumes below have big {and small} memories attached to them. Some were worn for a season of my life. Others lasted years. Those scents can immediately take me back to the good memories I earned while wearing it. I regret purchasing a few, mostly because I didn't have the same shopping sense that I do today. {Read: headache city!}

Buying a perfume over the New Year's holiday also made me feel like I was getting a shiny, happy lease on 2014. This smell could be the one with which I remember {what I hope are} exciting things ahead. In the strangest way, it made me even more hopeful for the new year. Sometimes, the whole "new year, new you" idea rings true in the most realistic of ways. This year, Jo Malone and I will take on the world.

Am I the only crazy one who attaches memories like this to smells or are you in the same camp? I'm praying I'm not alone here! If you have a picky nose like me, what fragrances have recently passed your test? xoxo {av}

my curl evolution.

 While it still surprises me that people want my curly hair advice, I am here to share a few of my secrets. In the last year, I have worn my hair straight for less than 10 days. I am about as low-maintenance as they come. This post contains some embarrassing early-in-life photos to show my curl evolution and a handy guide to the morning routine I've used for more than 12 years.

From start to finish, my entire morning hair routine takes me less than three minutes. I could dedicate more time to perfecting my curls, but I find the more time I spend, the less controllable my curls become. Some days, the process works better than others, but it still works. Though I'm sure my younger self would cringe at the thought, I have come to accept a bit of volume as a badge of honor.

a curly girl's guide to easy curls--in less than three minutes a day!

As most curly haired women do, I have a love-hate relationship with my crazy locks. My mom "straightened" my hair every four days or so until fifth grade, when I took control of my own curl destiny. After finally growing out my bangs in sixth grade, I discovered those magical accordion-like hair contraptions which helped me keep things somewhat contained. The best discovery though? MOUSSE. Over the last 15+ years, I have tried countless other remedies...and nothing seems to work quite like mousse. For your viewing pleasure {and amusement}, I present to you my very own curl evolution--complete with American Girl dolls, braces, and blown-out bangs...

Since I was 16, I have used some variety of Pantene Pro-V Mousse and Detangler/Leave-In Conditioner. While I have tried curl creams and potions from my salon, the volume of product I require keeps me coming back to my old staples. These products are also easy to find when we travel, which makes it easier to travel without checking my bag. I just make a quick stop at a drugstore when we land. {The $8 investment is much cheaper than checking a bag both directions!} In the last year, I have added a bit of Moroccan Oil hairspray to my routine for long days. I think any hairspray will do, as long as it is of the light hold variety.

My process may sound crazy, but it is tried and true. The towel really helps prevent me from touching {and frizzing up} my curls. Brushing curls may be a hairstylist's worst nightmare, but it works wonders for my curl definition. Though I can't promise to create curls for straight-haired ladies, this is the process I use to tame my curly mane on a daily basis...

If you're a curly girl, what products do you use?
I may have my own routine, but I always love to hear what works for others.
Cheers to my fellow curly girls out there! xoxo {av}

fun shades for fall.

Last Thursday, I allowed myself a rare manicure and tried out Cashmere Bathrobe from Essie's fall collection. The cuddly name had me at hello! This steely gray with the slightest metallic touch is definitely darker than I normally wear, but I have really enjoyed it over the last few days. I also spied the newest Essie shades coming to life elsewhere. Here are a few of my favorite fun shades for fall 2013--in nail polish, eye shadow, and earring form!

your best blowout.

I've had crazy curls my whole life. {You can see early evidence here.} Growing up, my mom attempted to tame my locks, but it wasn't until I discovered mousse in 1999 that I came to embrace my curls. Truth be told, I am still clueless about how to straighten my hair. I only own a blow dryer because I know our female house guests might need one. I've never used it.

{cv} fell in love with me with curly hair, so thankfully, he prefers my hair the natural way. I do too. It's easy and low-maintenance, which is a lot like my beauty routine. When I do want a change in pace, I rely on the professionals. I got my first "blowout" in November 2011 and loved the results. {cv} didn't mind them either. My "straight" hair is definitely different than what I wear on a daily basis. After an experience at a few different salons, I have a few tips for your best blowout...

1)  Think through what else you have on the docket for the week you book your blowout. If you're training for a marathon, a blowout may not be your best investment. Sweat {or any kind of moisture} is a blowout's biggest enemy. Be realistic: you want to make your blowout last--and if it can't, it may not be worth it.
2)  Double check the weather forecast. If the weather would breed frizziness, you're almost guaranteed to have double the volume when it is blown out. {This goes hand in hand with #1.}
3)  Go in with an open mind. They're professionals. Let them give you a little body or volume. In the days after your blowout, you'll be glad you did. This extra oomph will keep it from looking flat and dull.
4)  Even though you'll want to, don't touch your lovely tresses. I can vouch for this. Too much touching is a recipe for fluffy locks.
5)  Just say no to hairties: I'm a big topknot fan after a long day at work. For the days after your blowout, do everything to resist the urge for a bun or a ponytail!

{Dress: Rent The Runway | Necklace: Moon & Lola | Phone Case: Kate Spade | Watch: Michael Kors}

Speaking from experience, I simply cannot say enough good things about Be Styled. Not only is their facility gorgeous and inviting, their staff knows how to make a girl feel pretty every day. {Isn't that a great concept?} If you have the chance to visit Be Styled or another blow dry lounge in your area, take it. You'll feel like a queen for the day {or two or three}. I was able to stretch out my Be Styled blowout for three full days! {I know people who are able to stretch it even longer, but I'm not that brave!}

What other tips would you give to make your blowout last? xoxo {av}

NOTE: I was given a free blowout to sport at our Boston Bloggers event in August. I was not required to write a post for their services. I simply liked my experience and wanted to share more about a curly girl's perspective with blowouts.

good day sunshine.

Nearly three years ago, I made a happy {and pricey} discovery while roaming the makeup aisle in Nordstrom: the Clarins counter. Though I am far from a beauty product junkie, I fell head over heels for their products. The pricetags may be steep, but I include it in my beauty budget. Why? I'm considering it a long-term investment in my skin and a short-term investment in my happiness.

Last week, I ran out of my Clarins Multi-Active Early Wrinkle Cream, so I knew a trip to Nordstrom was in order. This cream has been my go-to for years now, so I knew right where to find it. Imagine my surprise when I found a much taller, slimmer bottle to the right of it which also had SPF! I was ecstatic. Cue the entry of Clarins Multi-Active Early Wrinkle Correcting Lotion with SPF 15 in my daily routine.

Many moisturizers with SPF cause me to break out, so I was anxious to see how my skin would respond. After a week, I am happy to say this $58 investment was worth every cent. I haven't had any blemishes {outside of the "ohmygoshwe'removing" ones}. Because of the pump feature, I find this lotion bottle much easier to "ration" than the cream jar. The amazing smell remained the same in both formulations, so color me happy yet again. Above all, the SPF on a daily basis is absolutely essential for me. Eliminating a step by combining my daily moisturizer and an SPF will save me time in the mornings--and keep me safe at the same time. It's a definite win-win.

What investments do you make in your beauty routine? Do you have another favorite lotion with SPF in it? Share your secrets, friends! xoxo {av}

bronze(r) beauties.

As the temperatures slowly start to creep up this spring, getting a little color becomes a big priority. Thankfully, we can now get that color without hitting the tanning bed. Being sun savvy is incredibly important to me as a skin cancer survivor. Last spring, I pulled together a massive list of self tanners {or for the full-length pin here}. This year, I went a similar route and compiled 29 different facial bronzers in a variety of formulas and budgets. If you don't see your favorite below, be sure to leave it in the comments! I would also love your feedback on bronzers you love and loathe...

My favorite bronzer {as of late} is this one from Bobbi Brown. In my earlier days, I loved this very cost-effective one from Bonne Bell. One thing I've learned over the years is that the brush you use really does matter. I treated myself to this one with a giftcard this Christmas--and love it!

The biggest takeaway is that getting a faux glow doesn't have to be expensive. Being healthy is the most important. Using a bronzer with an SPF is the best plan. Your face will thank you when you're 60, I promise. I can't wait to hear your feedback on this bronzer debate :) xoxo {av}

three recent beauty buys.

It felt like Christmas for me last night at Nordstrom. I have been holding onto a giftcard I got from my parents since December 25th and finally decided to cash it in for some beautiful goodies. I've had my eye on this brush for months, but the lipgloss and eye base were more spur-of-the-moment {I have a giftcard!} purchases.

Clarins 'Instant Light' Eye Perfecting Base

Even though I know lighter lips are in this spring, I wanted to try something a bit deeper. {I don't know if I'll ever be able to pull of the reds or fuschias everyone else rocks with ease!} Per usual with Clarins products, I can't wait to incorporate this base in my routine. It's super easy to apply, which is a recipe for success in my book.

Have you made any recent beauty buys? Do you make spur-of-the-moment purchases or do you go in with a plan? I know we talked game changers last week, everyday make-up is a whole different ball game! I can't wait to hear what you're loving lately. See you all tomorrow for a lacy round of Friday's Fancies!
Have a great Thursday! xoxo {av}

gamechanger.

Let me tell you a little story: On Saturday night, I stayed up until 4:30am chatting with my girlfriends, slumber party style. On Sunday morning, our bodies still woke us up at our normal weekday time. {What happened to being able to sleep past 10:00am, college-style?} I made the three-hour drive home later that day and faced a mountain of work before I could hit the pillow again. Suffice it to say, Monday morning was brutal too. The only thing which made me look like I hadn't been hit by a truck after those late nights?
This magically wonderful product, otherwise known as Clarins Eye Contour Gel.

I don't generally like to do product posts, but I couldn't hold out on you all any longer. I first purchased the eye contour gel in October 2011. I was skeptical to pay the $35, but I listened to the woman at the Clarins counter. She told me this product would be a gamechanger, but I didn't believe her. 16 months and two tubes later, it is the one beauty product which makes my day infinitely better. After a late night or an early morning, a little bit of this on your undereyes will feel a.m.a.z.i.n.g.

I have super sensitive skin around my eyes and wear contacts, so I was worried this product might cause me problems--but it doesn't at all. Not only does it help with puffiness, it helps my eye make-up stay on so much better. Thanks to the genes from my dear old dad, I have some serious dark circles. The Clarins Eye Contour Gel definitely helps hide them. Since I know {cv} doesn't hop on my blog frequently, I can also tell you that even he likes using this stuff. I always feel ready to embrace the day after a few drops of this goodness. I will now happily spend the $35 to replace it.

Do you have a game-changing beauty product in your arsenal?
Help a girl out! I can't wait to see what you've got in your bag of tricks! xoxo {av}

silver belles.

Regardless of what holiday you celebrate this time of year, there is always an extra dose of sparkle involved. Paired with a smattering of holiday happiness, it is easy to be entranced with the season. I was on the hunt for fun ways to up the ante this December--without breaking the bank. The gorg necklace dials in at $32, but everything else is $28 or less. Sign me up!

Whether it is dressing up your phone or playing up your eyes, affordable holiday sparkle is sure to please.
Do you have a go-to source for budget-friendly accessories? Spill your secrets, pretty please! xoxo {av}

glitter goodness.

While I was on vacation last week, I switched it up and got a glitter manicure. I loved rocking Essie's Beyond Cozy! Though I was nervous it might be too loud, it was just the right amount of sparkle.
I can guarantee it won't be the last time I wear some glitter goodness this holiday season.
Here are 15 other glittery nail colors which caught my eye...

The only problem I had with the polish? Getting it off at the end of the week ;)
 Do you have any tricks in that department?! I am certainly all ears.

green goddess.

If you saw my Friday's Fancies last week, you would know I'm having a bit of a love affair with emerald green. Makeup is an easy way to let this color creep in your everyday rotation. Here are nine different green makeup options to give this hue a try and channel your inner green goddess!

I've also heard fab things about that Smashbox Primer! Any tips for getting over my fear of green nails? {Mostly, is it in any way okay in the corporate world?} I can't wait to hear your opinions!

wear your wine.

Hello again! I hope y'all had a great long weekend :) I have always been a bit leery of sporting super dark nails--but not because I don't love the way they look. I am a "quick-nicker" {aka I only get about a day's worth of wear before I somehow nick my nail polish}. The gel + shellac route is great...until it's time to take it off. Oy! Suffice it to say, I'd still really love to tackle the wine-colored nail trend this fall.
Here were ten of my favorite shades in my weekend research...

first row: Le Métier de Béaute Kona + Deborah Lippmann Just Walk Away Renee
second row: Essie Up's + M.A.C Underfire Red
third row: Deborah Lippmann Lady is a Tramp + Dior Massai Red
fourth row: NARS Jungle Red + Lancôme Madame Tulipe

Now I'm dreaming of a big glass of pinot noir at 7:30am. If I could just decide on a color,
I could wear my wine--regardless of the hour ;)

summer beauty essentials.

A very happy Tuesday to you! Back in November, I shared my daily make-up routine. I loved hearing about the products you use every day. Though my make-up routine isn't much different, there are a few tweaks to my beauty regimen during the summer months. Below, you'll find six products which have helped me survive the heat without looking too much like I just ran a marathon...

1) I've shared my love of this sunscreen before, but this Clarins Milk Lotion Spray SPF 50+ has become my go-to for my all-over coverage.

2) For a sassy and summery touch, I've been loving this Essie Tart Deco on both my fingers and toes.

3) Though I have shied away from bronzer for a few years, I rediscovered it recently. Thanks to Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder, I now have a summer glow without the sun's harmful rays.

4) Clarins makes my everyday SPF coverage so much better. This Multi-Protection Day Screen SPF 40 isn't heavy and doesn't make me break out, which is an absolute win-win in my book.

5) A Clarisonic Mia 2 was on my birthday wishlist--and it's changed my life, as cliché as that might sound. My skin feels so much better and I know it's going to make a world of difference all year round.

6) I hated hairspray growing up because I used to get mouthfuls during dance recitals. My hairstylist recommended I give Bumble & Bumble Spray de Mode Hairspray a try and I'm so happy I did!
---
Though a few of these beauties are a bit of an investment, I budget to fit them into my routine.  {I also know that can't take my sun safety lightly.} I can't wait to hear about your summer beauty essentials--I'm constantly looking for new additions to my round-up :) Enjoy your day, friends!
