stellar stacks.

Hi, I'm Alison and I have a magazine hoarding problem. {I hope I'm not the only one!!} When I spied these magazine stacks in the portfolio of Elizabeth Newman Interior Design, I realized I wasn't alone. They also made me realize magazine stacks don't have to look cluttered. VICTORY!

I have every Martha Stewart magazine since the day {cv} and I got engaged. They have wonderfully uniform spines. Before I spied this photo, I hid my collection away. With this photo as inspiration, I plan to share these issues much more prominently.

There is definitely a very fine line between chaos and style. A few tips from the resident magazine maven:
1) Consider the number of subscriptions you have and keep. I still subscribe to quite a few magazines, but I only tend to save the home magazines. I've decided to save myself the extra cash {and clutter} by cutting down on the magazines I receive every month.
2) Force yourself to sort your magazine loot through every month. When we're traveling frequently, I end up with mile high stacks of magazines because I'm not taking the time to make my way through them. This seems like a no-brainer, but it often gets thrown on the back burner.
3 If you keep a wide variety of magazines, it doesn't exactly spell "pretty" stacks. Think about what you'll use the magazine for in the future. If you don't have a solid answer, you should place it in the nearest recycling bin. I keep my Marthas because they're timeless--and are always chock full of fantastic ideas.

Are you a fellow magazine hoarder? How do you keep your "collection" organized? xoxo {av}

  2. i kept magazines for years and finally tossed them all 2 moves ago. I did keep a set of elle decors and a stack of mags from the boston art mag i worked at for 2 years. my only regret is tossing dominos years ago. I stack mine with other books next to my coffee table.

  5. Oohhh I must confess, I am guilty of hoarding a nice large stack and then every few months I week through them. I really should just display them proudly like in these lovely pictures, eh? Then I wouldn't have such a mess pile on my desk! Thanks for the great idea. :)

  6. I am a TOTAL magazine hoarder. Not a few months at a time like you speak of, but like years of old old magazines that in such high volume it's probably a fire hazard. I kept every magazine I got as a teen, so once I moved out of my parents she insisted I find a home for my backlog of Teen & Seventeen magazines- and I couldn't bear to throw them out, so I went through all of them and cut out pictures and articles I wanted to save! Like I need an intervention, for real.

    Now I maintain a healthy stack on my coffee table, but I still save old issues if there's someone I really like on the cover (I think I have every magazine Reese Witherspoon has ever been on) in nicer magazine holders. I have been taking advantage of the digital subscriptions that come with every print subscription now for my iPad (so much more convenient on the boat back and forth to Nantucket!) but I still can't bear to give up my clippings.

  7. Oh man, this totally hits home. I seem to have piles of magazines everywhere. We have turned our frequent flyer miles in for magazines the past few years and I just don't have time to read all of them! I love this photo and I am now brainstorming great ways to make my magazines look fancy... not messy.
