what to wear to a high school reunion.

Though I'm only one year behind him, {cv} has the honor of being the first to hit his 10th high school reunion year. In normal {av} fashion, I've got my eyes on a few Rent The Runway dresses and need your input. I have only met a handful of his high school friends, so I'm admittedly a little nervous. Here's the hitch: it is being held in a bar--so I don't want to be seriously overdressed. I am aiming for polished without trying too hard ;) Here are a few of my front-running options...

{all dresses available for rent between $50 + $100 on Rent The Runway}

Since {cv} is from Maine, the weather won't be optimal for the December reunion. I plan on rocking some tights and pumps with whatever I choose. Nothing too fussy. I'm inclined to believe the lacy dresses may be a bit too much for a bar. If I showed up at your reunion in such attire, would you judge? No holds barred here, friends. I need your honest opinions! Would I be better off just rocking a cute top and jeans? Ahh! I am seriously clueless here.

Thank you for your input! Please leave the number of your favorite dress below and any other advice you may have. I'll need it! I still don't know what I'd do without Rent The Runway ;) Happy Veterans Day!

P.S. This is not a sponsored post for Rent The Runway. I just love them that much.

  1. Those lace dresses are gorgeous, but I agree they might be a bit much! The black dress (#!) will be stunning when you play it up with accessories and heels. Have fun!

  2. I personally am obsessed with no. 5 (and enjoy the excuse that you "can never be overdressed or overeducated"...), and quite honestly depending on the bar that could be played up or down to be perfectly appropriate, however if you are worried about overdressing, I would go with no. 1 like Betsy said! You could wear with tights and black boots (heeled or flat, the flat would dress it down a bit too).... Whatever you end up doing though I'm sure will be fabulous!

  4. I like 1, 4, and 6 the best! #1 looks like the easiest to dress up or down depending on the look you're going for. But it's just a little black dress. If you're going to rent something, make it worth it! You can get a LBD anywhere.
    I vote #4 or #6!

  5. I live in Maine! where is the reunion? a bar in Portland? Maine is casual casual casual. Those dresses are adorbs but might be too fancy for even a wedding up here. AND you dont want your legs to freeze and in the winter with ice and cobblestones, flats are definitely the answer.
Dark jeans, cute shirt, flats/boots, fun accessories...Maine girl winter uniform.

  6. My first picks would be the lace dresses because I'm in love with lace. If I saw you wearing one at a reunion I'd think "Damn what a fabulous dress and woman!" My other pick would be the first LBD. Very simple and can be dressed up/down more with accessories and shoes.

My 10 year reunion is next year.. gulp.

  7. Boston-based Mainer here... I agree with Becca, Maine is super casual! And cold, as you know. As someone who far prefers to be overdressed than underdressed, I might still vote for dark jeans, a blousey long-sleeved top (J.Crew Talitha-style), a statement necklace, and heels (if it's icy, make sure CV stays by your side!). Hope that helps-- have so much fun!

  8. I think I am liking number 1 or 3, both very cute and unstated! That is so exciting, everyone will love you!

  9. I would go with 1 or 3. I mean, who cares that Maine is casual... it's an event!! I have my reunion in two weeks and I'm wearing a dress to a bar as well.

  10. number three, hands down! it's fun, but not fussy & it would look great with tights! :)

  11. I love the first 3 choices! I think any of those would be great! But I'd say no to jeans! And I'll be having my reunion next year! Eeek! Gosh where has the time gone!

  12. I've been looking at No.4 for a wedding I'm going to in the spring. It's just so cute! It'd be perfect for a reunion; you'd knock 'em dead :)

  13. although i am obsessed with number three, i think one or two are more "bar" friendly. but it also depends on how it is being held. is it being advertised as a cocktail reception or just a meet up at the bar sort of thing?

  14. #1 or #6 - You don't want to be too revealing. Or too "uptight". With those two options you would fit in but neither be underdone or overdone. Plus- accessory choices are endless!!

  15. I vote #3! That sheath dress seems more casual than the other options but still chic- and the polkadots are freaking adorable! DO IT!!! :)

  16. definitely #1: sophisticated, classic, flattering.

  17. i am loving #2 & #3!!! cant wait to see what you choose!

  18. What about #3 with tights and boots? That would dress it down a bit. They are all so cute though!! You are going to look fab!

  19. Oh gosh, I'd love #4 for New Years! Do you happen to know who it's by?

But for the reunion, I'd go with #1.

  20. The lace dresses are gorgeous, but I agree with you about it not being the right fit for a bar. I'm always partial to polka dots, and I think #3 would look super cute with tights! Have fun!

  21. NUMBER ONE.

Just my opinion, but I think lace is too much, number 2 is too low cut/tight, and number 3 is just a little bit too trendy.... for a high school reunion. I would wear each and every one of those to other types of events-- just not the reunion.

Number one is truly classic. Who could go wrong with a little black dress?

    XO!

  22. I love #1 through 3, but #3 the most! I think it has that cute and polished look without trying too hard. I think tights and suede booties would look perfect with it!

  23. Number three, all the way!!! :) :)

  24. I love #1 and #6...with #6 you can dress it down with boots and #1 is dressy enough for a bar, but not overly dressy...love them both

  25. oooh PLEASE wear number 5! That plumb color is fantastic! But, if you're going for understated, i think the black option at number 1 would be perfect with some statement jewelry.

  26. If you are worried about being overdressed I say work #1 and play it up with some cute accessories. Although I am of the mind that you can't ever be overdressed. You can't help it if you always look fabulous and everyone else doesn't ;) Looking forward to seeing what you choose!

  27. love your picks!! That polka dot dress is uhmazing!!

  28. Great picks! I love #2 - the cut and color would look super cute on you! While I love the lace, I agree with you; might be too dressy for this event...however, what kind of bar is it? That could sway my opinion if it's a dressier/trendier atmosphere. I'm actually planning my 10-year for this summer and would love to rock one of these dresses. Unfortunately, I can guarantee that most people will be in jeans. :(

Would you recommend Rent the Runway for certain events (showers, bachelorette party, etc.) in my very near future? :) :) :) Or do you think I should splurge on dresses that I can keep to not only wear again, but associate with the events themselves for memories' sake? Would love your opinion!!!

  29. I agree - no. 4 is the best. BUT, I also agree you may be a bit overdressed if you choose it. I say either go for the gold, or no. 1 might be a safer bet. How can you ever go wrong with a LBD?

    ReplyDelete
  30. You can never go wrong with an LBD. #1 styled up with some cute accessories is my pick!

  31. One or three with tights. You can dress either up with shoes and some fun Jewelry.

  32. On an unrelated note, I'm pretty sure that girl was on America's Next Top Model. I'm always really intrigued by Rent the Runway, but have never actually pulled the trigger before!
